Did you know that today is considered National Wine Day in America? To mark the occasion (and for an excuse to talk about wine some more!), we have put together a list of our top five favourite supermarket wines right now. Are you looking for business translation services? Contact Translation Services UK
Sure, we have our subscriptions and trusted suppliers, but if you’re anything like us (and we suspect that you are), there will be the odd moment of weakness in a supermarket when something simply grabs your eye and you find yourself reaching for a few bottles…
With this in mind, we wanted to share with you the bottles that we have been putting into our trolleys as we wander the aisles. Treat yourself this National Wine Day – you deserve it!
Araldica Barbera d’Asti 2014, Piedmont, Italy – currently £6.99 at Waitrose
Reviewing this delicious and very afforable wine (on offer until June 5th!) for The Telegraph, Susy Atkins described it as “a sophisticated Italian red for the price, with soft, fresh raspberry and redcurrant tones – just right for a mushroom risotto”. Winning Bronze at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards along with Silver in the same year at the International Wine Challenge, we would recommend stocking up on a few bottles!
Chateau Souverain Chardonnay California – available for £10.99 at Waitrose
No one does chardonnay like the Californians and this is a stunning example. Summarised by the winery as boasting “inviting aromas of roasted pears, lemon citrus and subtle baking spice with elegant layers of pineapple and crème brûlée flavours”, once you enjoy a glass we’re sure you’ll be adding it to your list of regular ‘must-by’ staples. It scored an impressive 90 points on Decanter’s renowned tasting scale, so pick up a bottle and see why.
Espartero Rioja Gran Reserva 2010 – available for just £11.48 at ASDA
Why not take a leaf out of Master of Wine Christopher Burr’s book and venture to ASDA, where you can pick up a bottle of this and enjoy a “very good class” Rioja? With tasting notes of red cherries, bitter chocolate and sweet fruit, this is a great supermarket wine that holds its own among competitors. Being a “gran reserva” style, it has aged for at least 5 years with a minimum of 24 months in oak and 36 months in the bottle…
Pisano Cisplatino Tannat – available as a case of 6 from Marks & Spencer for £60
Recommended to be paired with moussaka, lamb or perhaps spicy empanadas, this is a bold Uruguayan red made under an artisan tradition at a family-run winery. Last year, this wine took home the Platinum Best in Show trophy for Best Value Red Single-Varietal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, and you can purchase six bottles for just £60 at Marks & Spencers, making this a great value for money opportunity!
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Gewurztraminer, Alsace 2016 – available for £9 per bottle
How about a wildcard? Produced by the Cave de Turckheim winery in eastern France for Sainsbury’s, this white would be the perfect accompaniment to spicy Thai curries. With aromas of rose and lychee, it is complex and elegant and a delight to pick up while doing the weekly shop. This wine was recently featured in Decanter’s “Great Sainsbury’s Wines to Try This Winter” article and we were convinced to get ourselves a bottle – it did not disappoint! The price point is pretty great, too…
